Soil can be amended. Watering schedules can be adjusted. But the light your garden receives is largely fixed by your property's orientation, surrounding structures, and tree canopy. Choosing plants without first understanding your light conditions is the single most common reason first-time gardens underperform.

This isn't about being a perfectionist — it's about setting realistic expectations. A tomato plant in deep shade won't produce fruit no matter how well you water or fertilize it. Plant labels use a small vocabulary of light terms that carry specific, practical meanings. Understanding them precisely prevents the common mistake of assuming "partial shade" and "mostly sunny" are interchangeable.

Areas receiving fewer than three hours of direct sunlight are classified as full shade and are best reserved for shade-adapted ornamentals.

  • Full sun: Six or more hours of direct sunlight daily. Required by most vegetables, many herbs, and sun-loving perennials. Morning and afternoon sun count equally in hours, though afternoon sun carries more heat intensity.
  • Partial sun / Partial shade: Three to six hours of direct sun. These two labels are often used interchangeably, but there's a subtle difference in emphasis. Partial sun suggests the plant can handle more sun within that range; partial shade implies a preference for the lower end. When in doubt, treat them as the same category and observe how your specific plant responds.
  • Dappled light: Indirect, filtered light through a canopy — not classified as direct sun hours, but more nourishing than deep shade. Well-suited to woodland plants, hostas, and many ferns.
  • Full shade: Fewer than three hours of direct sun. True full shade rarely supports food crops but accommodates a wide range of ornamental plants.

Test Before You Commit

If you're unsure whether a spot qualifies as partial sun or full sun, place an inexpensive solar-powered light in that area and note when it charges noticeably versus barely at all. How to Actually Assess Your Space

Observation is the method — no special tools required. On a clear day, check each area of your garden or balcony every two hours from early morning through late afternoon. Note whether the spot is in direct sun, partial shade, or full shade at each check. Keep a simple sketch or use your phone camera to record the results.

Seasonal Shifts Change Everything

A garden bed that receives full sun in June may drop to partial shade by October as the sun's arc lowers. If you're planning a fall garden, assess light conditions in late summer rather than relying on observations made in peak summer. This is especially relevant for urban spaces surrounded by taller buildings.

Repeat this once more in a different season if you can. The sun sits lower in the sky in spring and fall, which shortens the arc of light across your space and can put areas in shade that were sunny in July. South-facing spaces in the Northern Hemisphere receive the most consistent sun year-round. Spaces close to tall fences, walls, or buildings to the south lose the most light.

Matching Plants to What You Actually Have

Once you have an honest map of your light conditions, plant selection becomes much more straightforward. If your only sunny spot gets five hours of afternoon sun, lean toward partial-sun crops like chard, herbs such as cilantro or parsley, and compact pepper varieties — rather than pushing full-sun tomatoes into a marginal spot.

Working with your conditions rather than against them also reduces your maintenance burden. Plants in appropriate light are generally more resistant to pests, less prone to leggy or stunted growth, and more forgiving of occasional gaps in watering.
